What are we doing at the Eiros Group lately? Training, training and more training!

Our goal is to learn more to help you more! Our team of support brokers took person centered trying with MAPS and PATH training in September and November. The team also participated in field community mapping training in September. Community mapping is all about involving residents to identify the assets of their neighborhood, and creating a picture what it is like to live there. The support brokers went in twos to various towns our customers live in. Our support brokers visited libraries, municipal buildings/offices, Police Stations, Historical Societies, Comic Book/gift stores, antique stores, civic centers, old theaters, food pantries, gyms, YMCA’s, coffee shops, the Morris Canal walking path, restaurants and a plethora of other places. We were given a list of places to visit, and it felt like a fun treasure hunt of learning. It was all about making connections in the community to help our customers obtain more resources. Everyone came back energized and excited about all the things we learned and connections we made.

In both September and November we participated in learning about Person Centered Planning, PATH, MAPS and Circles of Support. www.inclusion.com

PATH, MAPS and Circles were developed to assist individuals , families and their support networks plan positive futures. Circles came first with (with Judith Snow) to discover who was in her life, to work on building and exciting robust future. MAPS had its origins in schools, to replace the medicalized files with stories that children and adults could use to discover the potential and direction for inclusion and friendship for all. PATH followed by reversing the planning process beginning with the North Star imagination of dreams and highest purpose, then a vision of possibility , working backwards in steps into an action plan to implant a better life. I got a lot out of both PATH and MAPS training. I was able to define my position at the Eiros Group, and set gaps tp reach my North Star and reach my goals, with putting them in monthly, tow month, six month and two year goals. This is something I will use for our customers in and in my personal life. The whole team enjoyed drawing MAPS for each other and making stronger friendships with each other.

Circle of Friends or Circles of Support are the structure of our relationships. It is a way of learning who is important to us, who is in our inner circle, next circle, etc. Who do we love and rely on most? Who is always there for us? This is important for us to know who the group of people are that form a community around a specific person to assist them achieve their goals. This is known as person - centered planning. Many of the support brokers have had this training before, and were helpful to those who were new to it. The exercises and training were helpful for our customers and our own personal lives. We appreciate that Jennifer Brown is always looking for continued training for our team of support brokers to help us learn more to help our customers.

Janice Freedman Support Broker

Why I Became A Support Broker

by Janice Freedman

I saw an advertisement on a local Hunterdon County group Facebook page looking for a support broker in July, and was drawn to the job description. Our CEO and Founder, Jennifer Brown wrote she was looking for kind, smart, supportive and understanding people who wanted to help others. I had a long career in Sales and was ready to finally be able to help others.

Like many of us at the Eiros Group, I have a family member who has a disability. My brother’s son Robert was born with Autism, but it wasn’t diagnosed untill he was three years old, more specifically diagnosed with Aspergers.

When Robert was five, his mother died of an aneurism. My sister in law had just given birth to her third child, and now Robert and the two other children were left without a mother. Robert didn’t react to his mother’s not being there, but he did react strongly to putting on the church dress shirt and tie my mother laid out for him to wear. My mother and brother were learning how to pick their battles with my nephew, and Robert wore his favorite striped t shirt, shorts and sneakers. He was quiet all through the church service and didn’t say anything till we were walking in the cemetery. He saw the casket and asked if his mom was in the box, he was told she was, and he nodded, okay. Robert did not show any emotion of losing his mother, he went to school, he came home and played with whichever grandparent or babysitter was there.

As time went on, Robert excelled at school and in high school, he got a job in a supermarket as a cashier. Robert had no interest in learning how to drive, and used his bicycle to go places locally. He moved away from home, and went to college in Savannah, Georgia. Robert made the choice to leave college one semester short of graduation with a degree in electrical engineering. Robert then moved to Long Island to live with his mother’s brother and his family. He then got a job in a local supermarket as a cashier again, a job he enjoyed doing. After several years, Robert was promoted to an accounting position at the supermarket, which he is doing well in. He moved to an apartment within walking distance of the supermarket that he shares with a friend from work. Robert has a few friends that he socializes with and plays computer games in his apartment. He goes to his Uncle's house for dinners from time to time, and holidays. My six foot seven inches blonde nephew looks like a happy Viking, Robert is living his best life.

My position at the Eiros Group is community mapping which is finding helpful and resources for our valued customers. I enjoy doing research to find interesting local events, fun places to go in our customers neighborhoods, participate with others, and be out in our community.  Robert taught me a lot of things and continues to do so... Compassion, understanding, empathy, and that all any of us wants and needs is to have purpose and put our abilities to work. Robert and I have both found our niches!
